You never want to stare too long at the candle. The fire has a way. When you first look at it, you just see flame but the longer you look, you see other things about it. You notice how it dances, how it flares, how it moves on its own and you swear it’s a living thing, a thing that consumes everything in its path. You stare longer, you stare deeper and you expect it to stare back at you but it won’t. It’s just tricking you, dazzling your eyes so that you don’t look away. Because, if you did, you’d notice all those shadows just on the edges of the flame.
